History of
First Baptist Church
Havana, Illinois

Our Baptist Church was organized in July, 1849, by nine men and women of the Baptist faith who met in a Havana school; they brought their letters of dismissal from churches in New York, Kentucky, and Illinois. The Rev. John L. Turner brought a message from John 3: 36.

John 3:36
"Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on him."[1]

Footnotes 3:36 [1] Some interpreters end the quotation after verse 30

The first church building was located on the site of the present Bruning Lumber Yard. This simple frame building was moved, in 1896, across the street to the present Public library site facing West Adams Street with a small parsonage on the east end of the lot. The Baptists worshipped God in this building until the summer of 1903 when they arranged for the purchase of the Congregational Church building on the corner of Plum and West Jefferson Streets. This second building served as the church home until June 24, 1956 when the Baptists moved into their newly constructed building located at Main Street and Charlotte Avenue.
